Mars One
Type of Project
Concept project answering to the brief given by ICAD as part of the application for the Upstart Programme. This submission granted me a place in the programme.
Context and problem
Mars One is a not for profit foundation with the goal of establishing a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2027. The global search has begun for the first humans to set foot on Mars and make it their home and the opportunity to become an interstellar pioneer is open to everyone. Once candidates have been chosen they will receive extensive training before departing for their one-way journey to Mars in 2026. The challenge was to rebrand Mars One and create a suite of branded materials to complement and/or promote the programme.
Design process and outcome
I started by analysing the brief, why the communication was necessary and who was being impacted by it. My focus on this task was to create the branded materials given to the chosen candidates, keeping them informed and set up about the new way of living while also recognising them as pioneers in this remarkable achievement of humankind. I researched information about the red planet and references regarding the universe to give me inspiration to create the logo and design elements. The outcome was branded materials that transmit a clear, realistic and reliable message about the programme. I idealised a welcoming kit including a brochure about Mars, a quick guide, an astronaut food, a traveller’s logbook, a pencil, and (why not?) the boarding pass Earth to Mars. Also, I designed merchandise products aimed to people on Earth as a way to support and fundraise Mars One programme.
